🔥 Propane Refill Stations

Propane refill vs. exchange: what's the difference?

If you own a standard grill-style propane tank, you have two ways to get it filled again — and they are not the same product.

How exchange works

At an exchange cage (the steel cages outside grocery, hardware, and convenience stores), you hand over your tank — empty or not — and take a pre-filled replacement for one flat fee. It's fast and available almost everywhere. But there are three catches:

How refill works

At a refill station, a trained attendant fills your tank while you wait, usually by the gallon:

So which should you choose?

Refill if you own a decent tank, have a refill station within a reasonable drive, or use larger tanks or an RV. Exchange if it's 9 p.m., the grill is cold, guests are waiting, and the cage is right there — convenience is a real thing, and there's no shame in paying for it. Just know that's what you're paying for.

One more honest note: if your tank is expired (tanks need recertification 12 years after their manufacture date), a refill station must refuse to fill it — and then exchanging it, where the program accepts it, or buying a new tank, becomes the practical move.
